Ugh. Spam.
I just received a second Ask from an anon—the first part asks ” what does rena-librarian mean?” and then it asks if I make money using what is surely a spam site. I deleted it, but on the off chance that it was a legit question:
Rena’s been my online nickname forever, because it was shorter than using my whole username. I used to often use the handle RenaissanceGrrl but it was common enough that sometimes it’s taken by the time I get to sign up for a site. The first notable occasion was when I signed up for LiveJournal. Since, at that time, I was in school to get my Masters in Library Science, I just mashed up Rena_Librarian as my default backup and that’s what I use when RenaissanceGrrl isn’t available. (For the curious, I ended up only getting my Associate of Arts and then leaving school due to burnout. I won’t rule out going back “someday,” but it’s not something I’m actively planning at this time.)
RenaissanceGrrl came from my very early days of being online; I first started having my own identity at fourteen (which is when I signed up for my first email, RenaissanceGrrl@excite.com—long defunct, now). Most of my friends had fandom-related names, but I was in too many fandoms at the time (er, like four? XD) and couldn’t pick a favorite, so I just went with RenaissancGrrl as a play on “Renaissance man.” =) As for the spelling, my best friend was widely using the handle KatGrrl and I just liked it. Also Girl was taken.
(In retrospect, the idea of me being a Riot Grrl at that stage of my life is mildly hilarious.)
