Two things.

Firstly, treasure the moments. They pass so ridiculously quickly: one moment you wonder when the baby will learn to talk, the next they are asking what their first word was, and you can’t remember. You can look back nostalgically on everything, even the lack of sleep and the walking back and forth at 3 am trying to get a baby to close its eyes. So enjoy it, moment by moment.

And secondly, the only epiphany I ever had as a new parent was about 2 in the morning, cleaning diarrhea up off the bathroom floor. It was as if the skies opened for me and a beam of sunlight shone straight into my head. 

“This is simply what being parent is about,” I thought. “And as they get older, the nature of the shit will change.”

And I was right. It does, and it did.

Wouldn’t trade a second of it for anything, though. I’ve loved being a parent about as much as anyone can love anything.

…add that to my list of reasons to not want kids.
